By Nicholas Dewart

Doris Daley paints pictures of ranch life, but not in the usual way.As part of a family who ranched in the foothills of Alberta, Canada, for five generations, she knows how to shoot gofers, blow up a beaver dam and jump-start a 1955 John Deer tractor. It’s those experiences she paints with words. And she will give local residents an earful at the 19th annual Colorado Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Arvada. Entertainers from the United States, Canada and Australia will round up at the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities to perform poetry and songs from their western heritage. Tales of ranch life, cattle drives and rodeos will transpire at the event…

Liz Masterson, a Denver native, has been involved in organizing the Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Arvada since it began in 1990. The singer and yodeler also gives classroom lessons about cowboy poetry and music, and said the efforts to keep the Western traditions alive through today’s youth seem to be paying off.
“I think it’s working real well. I just did (a lesson) out in Nebraska where I spent a week in the schools to talk about singing and yodeling,” Masterson said. “I think kids are really receptive to that. I think it’s a real important mission.”
