For all you Takashi Nakazato fans… Takashi will arrive in Denver on July 16th, and will probably come to the Arvada Center late that day. He will be working in the ceramics studio for a week, starting on July 17th. We will not be offering a workshop from Takashi this year, BUT he is always open to having people come to the studio to watch him work. (And if you have not seen the man work his magic, it truly is a must see!)

Arvada Center Presents Figurative Sculptor Esther Shimazu, July 20
Esther Shimazu, a figurative sculptor from Hawaii, will present a lecture and visual presentation on her work at the Arvada Center on Tuesday, July 20, at 7:00 p.m. in studio 24B. There is no charge and the public is welcome.

“Most of the imagery is of bald, nude chunky Asian women, unconcerned about clothing and hairdo, comfortable in their own skins. There is the occasional male figure or companion animal. All invite the viewer to play, but underneath, there’s a hint that they might bite.” – John Natsoulas, Center for the Arts

The exhibit showcases over 100 Colorado artists chosen from the 350 in the Kirkland Collection – a journey through Colorado art – from early traditional work, to impressionist paintings, surrealism, referential abstraction, and pure abstractions. The upper galleries will showcase works on paper, and the main gallery will display primarily sculptures and works on canvas or panel.
“It has been my longtime aim to organize a major presentation of Colorado art,” states Kirkland’s Director and Curator Hugh Grant. “Conversations with national and regional scholars have supported the judgment that Colorado ranks quite high for its art history among the 50 states. This extensive exhibition will demonstrate the sweep of artistic innovation that occurred in Colorado over 100 years and beyond.”
