As you may have seen in our Action Alert from last week, the House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, which sets the initial funding level for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), approved a $15.3 million increase for the NEA in its FY 2009 spending bill. Currently funded at $144.7 million, this increase will bring the agency’s budget to $160 million. The bill is scheduled to be considered next week in the Senate where one of your Senators serves on the important Interior Appropriations Subcommittee. As the subcommittee begins consideration of this legislation, we need you to write your Senator in support of matching the funding level set by the House.

Since your Senator sits on this key subcommittee, your voice is all the more important to put the pressure on! Please take two minutes to visit the Americans for the Arts E-Advocacy Center to send a customizable message.

Miss Nelson is the nicest teacher in school and she teaches the kids in Room 207 who are the worst kids in school. They spend all day throwing spitballs, launching paper airplanes, giggling and refusing to do any work. Then one morning Miss Nelson is mysteriously missing from school. Gene Sobczak

Executive director, Arvada Center

During his five years at the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Sobczak built a reputation for creative marketing that sold more tickets at a time when most symphonies were selling fewer tickets. That’s good news for the Arvada Center, where he starts Sept. 4, since it recently expanded and faces increased competition from other arts centers and the city’s expanding entertainment options.
