Arvada Center: The Elephant Man Presented by PHAMALY
February 24 - February 26, 2012
The Elephant Man
By Bernard Pomerance
The Elephant Man, winner of numerous Tony Awards® including Best Play, is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. Victim of rare skin and bone diseases and horribly deformed, he goes from the star freak attraction in traveling side shows to London society where he evolves from an object of pity to a witty favorite of the aristocracy and literati.
When asked about his choice for the first show of its 23rd season, PHAMALY Artistic Director Steve Wilson said, “When we ponder dramatic literature in relation to the disabled community, there is not a play that speaks more directly to PHAMALY’s core message of inclusion than The Elephant Man.”
