Arvada Center Presents Regional Premiere of "Nine, The Musical"
April 20 to May 16, 2010
Starring Randal Keith, Jean Valjean in the Award-winning Arvada Center Production of
"Les Misérables," and an All-star Cast from Denver Metro
ARVADA, Colo., April 7, 2010 - The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities presents the regional premiere of the Tony award-winning musical production "Nine, The Musical" from April 20, 2010 - May 16, 2010 in the Main Stage Theater, starring Randal Keith, from the Arvada Center's 2008 production of "Les Misérables," and an all-star cast from the Denver metropolitan area. The all-new, originally created-and built-production by the Arvada Center is directed by Rod A. Lansberry, the Arvada Center's Artistic Producer.
"We are delighted to welcome back Randal Keith," said Gene Sobczak, Executive Director of the Arvada Center. "Randal not only starred in our 2008 production of "Les Mis" but also won a Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Award for his performance. He is a tremendous performer and a joy to work with," said Sobczak.
From the book by Arthur Kopit with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, "Nine" is the story of Guido Contini, a famous Italian film director in the early 1960s who suffers from a midlife crisis, the plight of creating his next successful film, and the strife of balancing relationships between his producer, his wife, his mistress, and the actress he needs to woo for his next film. The musical is loosely based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film "8 ˝."
"Different from the movie, our stage production of 'Nine' concentrates on the different connections between the women and Guido," said Rod Lansberry, the show's director. "The 20 women in the cast are amazingly perfect for their roles, and we were able to cast all of them from the Denver area," said Lansberry. "This is a difficult feat to pull off since these performers have different commitments across the country and aren't usually in town long enough and at the same time for a month-long production." From the cast of 20 women, 17 have previously performed at the Arvada Center.
"Nine" opened on Broadway in 1982 and won five Tony Awards including best musical. In 2003, it won two additional Tony Awards, including best revival. The movie, "Nine," opened on December 25, 2009, starring Daniel Day-Lewis with Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotilard, Penélope Cruz, Sophia Loren, Kate Hudson, and Fergie.
