The Arvada Center Closes the 2017 – 2018 Season with Stephen Sondheim's “Sunday in the Park with George”
Arvada CO – The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities closes its 42nd theatre season with Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, directed by Rod A. Lansberry, on Tuesday, April 17, 2018. Inspired by the painting “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte” by Georges Seurat, Sunday in the Park with George merges past and present into beautiful, poignant truths about life, love and the creation of art. This moving piece won a Pulitzer Prize and was nominated for an astounding 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Sunday in the Park with George is underwritten by Terry and Linda Stevinson. The 2017 – 2018 Theatre Season is sponsored by Lutheran Medical Center.
Performances are Tuesday through Saturday at 7:30 pm, with matinees on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 pm, through May 6. Preview performances are April 13, 14 and 15 at 7:30 pm. Audience engagement events, including a weekly theatre salon (registration required), insider’s talkbacks, and happy hours with the cast, are held through the run of the production. The story spanning over a century begins in 1884 where French Pointillist George Seurat is struggling to balance his artistic sensitivity and logical construction with his complicated personal life. Then the story skips ahead, to Seurat's great-grandson, George who is also an artist. Present-day George is frustrated as he searches for his artistic path only to find the answer to his future is in the past.
Sunday in the Park with George features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The book is by James Lapine. In addition to director Rod A. Lansberry, the Arvada Center creative team includes David Madore (musical direction), Clare Henkel (costume design), Diana Ben-Kiki (wigs & makeup design), Shannon McKinney (lighting design), Brian Mallgrave (scenic design) and David Thomas (sound design).
