Arvada Center Announces Auditions for “Chess, A Musical”

Chess, A Musical will be directed by Arvada Center Artistic Producer, Rod A. Lansberry, with musical direction by David Nehls and choreography by Kitty Skillman Hilsabeck.

Colorado auditions are December 1 and 2, from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., by appointment only.

Actors must be 18 years & older to audition.

Wojcik/Seay Casting will coordinate the New York City auditions, December 5 Р7, 2011. To be considered for a New York audition, mail a hard copy of your headshot and r̩sum̩ and indicate the role you are interested in (if known) to the following address:

Experienced performers with strong acting and singing abilities are needed. Dance and/or strong movement is required.  See the character breakdown (below) for specifics on available roles. Actors should prepare 16 – 32 bars of music from the show or a pop musical number. Please bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. Recorded music or a cappella audition will eliminate casting consideration. A current headshot and résumé are required. Equity members must have a current equity ID card.

This is an Equity LORT B production, although non-equity actors will be considered. Individuals of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds including a wide range of physiques are needed and encouraged to audition for all roles.

Rehearsals for Chess, A Musical begin on March 6, 2012. The show opens on March 27 and runs through April 29, 2012. Performances are Tuesday through Saturday evenings with matinées on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays for a total of eight shows per week.


Freddie Trumper (Rock-Style Tenor) – American chess champion. To play 30’s.  Temperamental, overly theatrical.

Florence (Mezzo/Belt) – Gregor’s young daughter. To play late 20’s early 30’s.   In adulthood, acts as Freddie’s second.

Anatoly Sergievsky (Baritone) – Russia chess champion.  To play 40’s Married to Svetlana, but falls in love with Florence.

Ivan Molokov (Bass) – Anatoly’s second. To play 40’s – 50’s. Russian

Walter (Bass/Baritone) – Freddie’s agent, to play late 30’s. Crass, commercial.  Secretly works for the C.I.A.

Arbiter (Rock-Style High Baritone) – Judge of chess championship. To play 30’s – 40’s

Svetlana (Mezzo/Belt) – Antaloy’s Wife. To play 35- early 40’s. Russian.

Open to ethnically diverse casting of the American characters.
