Set in 1905 in Lower Manhattan, 35-year old Esther Mills makes her living by sewing exquisite lingerie for socialites and women of ill-repute alike. Opportunities are scarce for a single, "colored" woman but her skills and discretion are much in demand and Esther manages to put aside money in the hopes of someday opening her own beauty parlor. Esther has another dream: to fall in love and get married. But does finding happiness take more than one woman’s determination?
