The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities opens its 2010-2011 theater series with one of the first regional productions in the United States of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Sunset Boulevard, in the Main Stage Theater, September 14, 2010 – October 10, 2010.
Based on the 1950 Billy Wilder movie with the same title, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, with book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, tells the tragic tale of has-been silent film star, Norma Desmond—stalled in the past and isolated in her dilapidated mansion—and her entanglement with a young screenwriter, Joe Gillis.
This all-new production stars Ann Crumb as Norma Desmond and is directed by Rod A. Lansberry, the artistic producer at the Arvada Center, recently recognized for his production of Miss Saigon. Also featured are Kevin Earley as Joe Gillis, Jenny Gelwick as Betty Schaefer, Stephen Day as Max, Mark Rubald as Cecil B. DeMille, and Jeremy Sortore as Artie.
David Nehls is the musical director, Kitty Skillman Hilsabeck the choreographer. Brian Mallgrave designed the sets and Clare Henkel designed the costumes.
Sunset Boulevard, which opened on Broadway in 1994, has not been seen in the Denver area since 1996, when the national touring production was launched from the Temple Buell Theatre.
