What is Great Comet About?
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 is a sung-through musical adaptation of a 70-page segment from Leo Tolstoy's 1869 novel War and Peace by Dave Malloy. The music merges Russian folk and classical with indie rock and EDM; creator Dave Malloy calls it an "electropop opera." It's a sung-through musical, with just one line of spoken dialogue coming in Pierre and Natasha's only scene together. On stage, nearly all of the actors play musical instruments.
It is based on Part 8 of Tolstoy's novel, focusing on Natasha's romance with Anatole and Pierre's search for meaning in his life.
PRESS:
Can a musical be a sexy beast? Especially if it’s infused with the yearning and even melancholy of the pre-revolutionary Russian sort? If the goings on at the Arvada Center are any measure, the answer is “yes, yes, a thousand times yes.” - Lisa Kennedy, Denver Post
"It's an incredible story with wildly different music than what I was used to hearing from a Broadway score. I also love actor-musician shows, so the fact that most of the actors were also going to be instrumentalists was so interesting to me." - Actor Brett Ambler, for Denver Westword
"Producing this show is more than a fun experiment for Collins; it’s the latest entry in an entire season that is pushing boundaries and taking risks." - Colorado Public Radio
"Audiences will see something in Denver they’ve never seen before... Just hold on tight and go for the ride.” - Actor Anna Maria High, for Colorado Community Media
"This is a crowning achievement for the Arvada Center who consistently build their reputation as THE place to go for outstanding theatre." - Beki Pineda, Front Row Center Denver
"Arvada Center has risen to the challenge of this musical adaptation of a section of Tolstoy’s masterpiece War and Peace." - OnStage Colorado
"The set is glorious, the costumes are terrific, and the show is a sight to behold. " - Tom Jones, Colorado Theatre Reviews
