Drag Queen Storytime

June 14, 2025

Jefferson County Public Libraries and the Arvada Center are proud to present this free community event celebrating Pride Month!

Come join us for the Arvada Center's first Drag Queen Storytime with Shirley Delta Blow. This is a fun event filled with laughter, rainbows, and sparkle. Join Ms. Shirley as she reads some of her favorite books that are perfect for kids of all ages. An accomplished story-teller, Miss Shirley uses stories to celebrate the diversity of our big, beautiful world through the glamorous art of drag. This joyful and uplifting event will have you singing along and put a big smile on your face.

Get ready for a warm welcome from the Parasol Patrol and their vibrant rainbow umbrellas! This all-ages event promises a joyful experience for children and families to connect with the fabulous Ms. Shirley. Enjoy complimentary snacks and drinks as Ms. Shirley leads an interactive story time filled with engaging questions about the books, personal stories from her time as a teacher, and a special Q&A segment, “Ask the Drag Queen.” There will also be opportunities for photos with Ms. Shirley for those interested. Don’t be surprised if the event bursts into singing, dancing, and bubbles—it’s all part of the fun!

Some possible book titles include: Perfectly Norman by Tom Percival and Be Who You Are by Todd Parr

About Ms. Shirley

Shirley was born at the Miss Queen of Aces Pageant in 2011. Colorado Gay Volleyball Association held this campy fundraiser annually. My talent was re-enacting Steel Magnolias using Barbie dolls. I wanted a name that suited a strong southern woman. I thought about Delta... Delta Burke, Delta Work, Mississippi Delta. I always love puns and plays on words. So Delta Card, Delta Hand, Delta Nace, Delta Joker came to mind. Delta is also the greek letter representing change in math and science. I thought that was a cool place to start. We landed on Delta Blow. Maybe this woman had a rough go at life. To make her southern we gave her three names. As in she's been surely dealt a blow.  And that is how Shirley Delta Blow got her name. It's that simple. Nothing to do with drugs or sex. Just a delightful woman whom life has tried to get the best of and she keeps a smile on her face and a little pep in her step.

This event is in partnership with the Jefferson County Public Library
