The Arvada Center Opens its Third Black Box Repertory Play Series With The Diary of Anne Frank

Arvada, CO – The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities begins the third iteration of its critically acclaimed Black Box Repertory season on February 1, 2019 with a heart-wrenching story of hope in the face of discrimination, The Diary of Anne Frank directed by Christy Montour-Larson.  This production is underwritten by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation and Dr. and Mrs. Richard A. Patt.  The 2018 – 2019 Theatre Season Presenting Sponsor is Lutheran Medical Center.

Performances of The Diary of Anne Frank take place Wednesdays at 1:00 pm, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2:00pm, through May 17.  The Diary of Anne Frank is performed in repertory – for specific performance dates, consult the Arvada Center website at www.arvadacenter.org.  Audience engagement events, pre-show chats with members of the cast, and audience talk backs, are held nearly for every performance.  To purchase tickets, and for additional details, visit https://arvadacenter.org/the-diary-of-anne-frank or call the box office at 720-898-7200.

In The Diary of Anne Frank, thirteen-year-old Anne Frank wrote to understand herself and the horrors of being Jewish in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. In doing so, she created one of the most powerful stories of the 20th century. Her diary was the one place for privacy in her attic hiding place. It holds her fears, her hopes, her laughter, her grief. Her belief that “in spite of everything, people are truly good at heart” has moved readers for more than seventy years.

Based on Wendy Kesselman’s 1997 adaptation of the 1955 script by Hollywood screenwriting team Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, we meet the full Anne; imperfect, funny, longing to become a woman and hopeful for a future she will never see.

The Diary of Anne Frank is presented by members of the Arvada Center’s Black Box Repertory Company of actors, directors, technical artists, and designers. Audiences will see the repertory actors throughout the season in a variety of roles. Since its inception in 2017, the Black Box Repertory company and its creative staff have been recognized as a groundbreaking and relevant component of the Colorado theatre community.  For information on the two other plays performed in repertory, The Moors (through May 18) and Sin Street Social Club (through May 19), go to https://arvadacenter.org/2018-2019-arvada-center-theatre-season

In addition to director Christy Montour-Larson, the Arvada Center creative team includes Brian Mallgrave (Scenic Design), Shannon McKinney (Lighting Design), Jason Ducat (Sound Design), Clare Henkel (Costume Design), and Lynne Collins (Artistic Director of Plays).

The cast features Darrow Klein (Anne Frank), Larry Cahn (Otto Frank), Emily Paton Davies (Edith Frank), Annie Barbour (Margot Frank), Regina Fernandez (Miep Gies), Daniel Crumrine (Peter van Daan), Lance Rasmussen (Mr. Kraler), Emma Messenger (Mrs. van Daan), Abner Genece (Mr. van Daan), and Zachary Andrews (Mr. Dussel).
