Presenting “Road To Mecca” produced by Creede Repertory Theatre

The AC presents the Creede Repertory Theatre production of
Athol Fugard’s The Road to Mecca.

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities will host the critically acclaimed Creede Repertory Theatre’s presentation of The Road to Mecca directed by Nagle Jackson in the Black Box Theater.

Living in a white South African village on the verge of seismic change, folk artist Helen Martins (played by Christy Brandt), is a woman adrift in a world suspicious of her independent and creative spirit. Miss Helen’s fragile understanding of her own self-worth and place in the village invites visits by two well-meaning helpers (played by Kate Berry and Logan Ernstthal) who surprise themselves by revealing their own dark secrets. A lively, sometimes humorous, always surprising drama unfolds in the midst of Miss Helen’s self-created “Mecca.”

Creede Repertory Theatre is an award-winning theater company located in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The Company presented The Road to Mecca as part of its recently completed 2011 summer season. The encore presentation at the Arvada Center will be the first ever production mounted in a semi-thrust configuration in the Black Box Theater.

The Road to Mecca marks the second collaboration with Creede Rep. “We met with Maurice LaMee, Creede’s Executive/Artistic Director, last winter to discuss the possibility of continuing our partnership, following the success of The Ladies Man in 2010,” said Arvada Center Artistic Producer, Rod A. Lansberry. “It made sense not only to extend the arrangement into the new season, but to use it as an opportunity to try something new and different. The Center’s Black Box was created to host a variety of theatrical environments. The Road to Mecca on a semi-thrust stage will offer audiences a brand new theatrical experience at the Arvada Center.”

I saw this show opening night in Creede and it will haunt me for a very long time. It is magnificent. Christy, Kate, and Logan bring the audience into their lives and minds with amazing dexterity. Absolutely see this amazing performance.

  2. Joseph Gude says:

This turns out to be an intense exploration of ‘life after the fall’.. after the fall from grace and spontaneous ease. It speaks to the daily challenge of creating and living one’s truth as one runs both slowly and suddenly into the realities of aging, mounting loss, and incapacitating lonliness. The dialogue knits these 3 characters (so solid and so wonderfully presented)into a web that slowly but surely I found myself entangled. Like at Creede, the intimacy of the Arvada theater enhances the production of this piece.
