Literary Fun and Games

Black Box Theatre - Included with general admission

Think you’re a good speller? Can you read a dramatic passage without laughing? Do you want to test your “book” knowledge in a trivia contest? If so, you’ll want to participate in Book Fest’s literary fun and games. There are contests for all ages and winners receive “book bucks” to use at the Book Fest to buy books, art, snacks and more. All contests take place in the Black Box Theatre.

To participate, arrive at the Black Box Theatre at least 15-minutes before each contest is scheduled to begin. All ages are welcome to participate.

11:00 a.m. - Dramatic Read-Off
Read a dramatic passage without laughing

1:00 p.m. - Spelling Bee
Compete to spell words like “abecedarian” and “tintinnabulation”

3:00 p.m. - Drag Queen Storytime
Join Shirley Delta Blow as she reads from some of her favorite books

4:30 p.m. - Book Trivia Contest
Test your literary knowledge

Main Stage Theatre- Included with general admission

11:30 a.m. - Staged reading of Indiana by playwright Steven Cole Hughes, followed by a panel discussion and question and answer session

1:30 p.m. - Poetry reading by Colorado Poet Laureate Joe Hutchison and poetry and prose presentation by local students

5:30 p.m. - Keynote presentation by New York Times Best Seller Laura Moriarty Followed by questions and answer session and book signing (Requires additional ticket purchase)

Don’t miss the Words with Strangers crossword game in the exhibit hall and Magnetic Poetry in the poetry café.

Upper Level, Theatre Gallery , 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.

Stop by throughout the day for beverages and snacks and to hear poetry readings from Merc Slam, Slam Nuba, Minor Disturbance, Punch Drunk Press, Mercury Cafe Friday Night Open Mic, Heard at Hub and more. Write your own poem on our giant magnetic poetry board.
