When COVID-19 forced the Arvada Center to temporarily shut our doors last year, it was supposed to be Opening Night for Bess Wohl's Small Mouth Sounds. We can't think of a better way to start up in-person theatre again than by giving this timely play about loneliness and connection a second chance at life.
The Arvada Center is grateful to be the first theatre in the region to produce live theatre with Union actors thanks to the Actors' Equity Association, and we asked the Small Mouth Sounds cast "What does it mean to you personally to be able to perform in Small Mouth Sounds this April?"
Small Mouth Sounds by Bess Wohl opens in our Main Stage Theatre on April 30, and closes May 30. We're moving this production from the Black Box to the Main Stage to safely space visitors out, and tickets for each performance are extremely limited. Don’t miss this unique off-Broadway hit about six participants in a silent yoga retreat and their attempts to connect and solve the problems of their lives. So much can be said without uttering a single word.
“To quote Anne Brontë:
‘My soul is awakened, my spirit is soaring.’"
“It is an opportunity to tell a story about loneliness and the need for human connection in a time when we need that the most.”
“Being able to open this beautiful play and tell this timely story of human connection means the world to me as an actor and a member of this theatre community, especially after we were posed to open just over a year ago. It says so much about the Arvada Center’s commitment to their audience, community and their continued support of local artists.”
“I love this play - the characters, themes, and messages - and can't think of a better one to return to live theatre with. I'm immensely grateful for all this company has done to open Small Mouth Sounds in 2021.”
“I’ve made a lot of trade-offs to be an artist and an actor, and finally they are worth it again.”
"Being able to perform this story again means we get to start connecting to our feelings again, instead of relying on survival mode.”
“Coming back to in-person theatre makes me feel like me again. Like my place in the world has been dusted off and it is time to begin again. Not exactly the same, no. But a new spring and a new run of Small Mouth Sounds. It feels complete somehow, to open where we closed.”
